Organizational Unit Overview

The Departments of Geography, Planning and Environment, Geological Sciences, and Chemistry are three of sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. Each is a diverse, research-intensive, and collegial unit that houses multiple undergraduate degree programs, and each offers the MS degree. In addition, faculty in these departments also advise PhD students in ECU’s Coastal Resources Management Program, and the Interdisciplinary Program in Biological Sciences.

East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu) is a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System and is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University, and enrolls around 29,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 90,000), which lies ~80 miles east of Raleigh and a short distance from the Atlantic coast.

ECU recently launched the Rural Prosperity Initiative, a commitment to harnessing the intellectual capital of university researchers to address challenges faced by rural communities. One of these challenges is the availability of potable freshwater in coastal plain environments. ECU is well-positioned both geographically and institutionally to contribute to the global issue of water resources, with emphasis on both our eastern NC region and national scales.

Job Duties

The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Technology at East Carolina University announce a major cross-college cluster hire in Water Resources. The initial senior hire, whose position will begin August 13, 2018, could be tenured in either the Department of Geography, Planning, and Environment, the Department of Geological Sciences, or the Department of Chemistry. The senior scholar will lead searches for additional faculty in the above named departments as well as the Department of Engineering in the College of Engineering and Technology.

In addition to developing and managing collaborative externally-funded research projects, the individual will teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the candidate’s area of expertise and provide service to ECU and the profession. The faculty member will also be expected to take a leadership role in the Water Resources Cluster and as such would have a reduced teaching role commensurate with a sustained successful research track-record and effective management of the cluster.

We seek individuals with an appreciation for the nature of the water resource management issues stemming from political, social, economic, and engineering factors that, on one hand, contribute to these problems, and on the other, hold the keys to their solutions. The cluster hires will quickly align themselves to collaborate with current researchers in various disciplines to build on existing research, but more importantly, to help it move in new directions and to explore new research opportunities.

Minimum Education/Experience

Applicants are invited for an associate or full professor position in the area of water resources research. The initial senior hire must have a PhD in Geography, Planning, Natural Resource Management, Geological Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field, such as Geophysics or Environmental Management and/or Policy. A range of specializations will be considered, but there is a keen interest in candidates with a nationally/internationally recognized externally-funded research agenda that centers on water resources policy and/or management. Active, portable funding is a requirement. Individuals applying to this position must also have proven experience in leading and working with interdisciplinary teams on water-related topics.
